North Texas Giving Day 2022

With 2022 North Texas Giving Day quickly approaching, we would like to take a moment to look back on the incredible accomplishments of the past year.

As many of our members likely are aware, we made a commitment over the past several months to return to holding our events in person. Luncheons, monthly/weekly group meetings, and all other events that went remote in order to protect our community are now being held in person once again.

We cannot thank all of our members enough for their flexibility and understanding as we weathered the pandemic together. While they are still some remote options for Language Classes, we are so excited to see everybody in person again. As part of returning to being in-person for our celebrations and events, we put significant work into building upgrades at the Yamagata Center.

A new type of event has also been added to our roster this year. Many members and visitors that have attended our luncheons in the past expressed an interest in learning how to cook Japanese cuisine. The flavors used in Japanese cooking differ greatly from that used in many Western dishes. The Fort Worth Japanese Society responded to this interest in Japanese cooking with our new Cooking Class series.

Chef Julia and Harumi Sharp prepared and hosted our first two Cooking Classes, where they demonstrated how to make onigiri and gyoza. In June, William Winston shows us how to make a delicious miso soup. We hope to announce the next date for a Cooking Class soon, so make sure to keep an eye out for more information!

Finally, one of the things that we are most proud of this year is the recognition we received regarding our history video project. The goal at the heart of this project is to collect the stories of Japanese-Americans in the Fort Worth area. Many of these people have suffered war and hardship, and the video project aims to honor these experiences. The North Texas Community Foundation recognized our efforts and awarded a substantial grant to see it completed early next year.

Nothing that we do at the Fort Worth Japanese Society would be possible without you, our members. Please consider participating in North Texas Giving Day to help us continue serving our community and bringing American and Japanese people closer together. On September 22, 2022, use this link to show your support. Any amount helps us take care of our building and continue to expand the ways we can interact with our community.
