Language Classes


The Japanese Language School conducts classes each week for both students and adults, serving as a bridge between Japanese and American cultures. The School also supports the children of Japanese ex-patriots by offering classes for elementary and preschool students.

The FWJS Language School has a variety of courses to choose from no matter what your level. We offer both in-person and online instruction for adult classes and in-person only for youth.

Early registration for spring semesters start in the middle of November and the last week of April for the fall.

Registration and Tuition

 

Adult - Summer Course - 10 Sessions - In-Person

Registration Ends May 12

 

Our summer program is a 10-week in-person course that lasts 45 minutes with focusing on developing or maintaining good communication and listening skills for current students. Classes will be on Mondays at 6pm.

The sessions will cover various common scenarios like casual conversations with friends/family/others, travel situations. and others. No books are required for these sessions. All Supplemental materials will be provided by the teachers.

Adult Class
16 Sessions - virtual via Zoom or In-Person

Registration Ends July 14


 

Classes are on Mondays, Wednesdays or Thursdays (Adv Class Only) and start at 6pm. Classes will last for 1.5 hours.
Please make sure you get the Kana version of the books.

If you sign up for a class and find that it is either too difficult or too easy for your skill level, you may transfer to another class (if available) within the first month of the semester.

New Students: If you are not signing up for BP101, check your skill level before signing up and a teacher will help guide you to the best suitable course. Evaluation forms here:

Returning students: should continue with the next level or consult their teacher to help select a course, then register for next semester.

You must pay tuition before the registration deadline.

Zoom Sessions are only available for beginner levels BP101-204

Children Class
16 Sessions - In-Person

Registration Ends July 14

 

Children's classes (ages 5-16) are in-person only and will start at 6 pm on Thursdays and last for 45 minutes. Materials will be provided by teachers. No textbooks are required.

There will be a waiting room for guardians available.

Enrollment for fall will begin April 1, 2024.

If you plan to move or if you are unable to attend your class as scheduled, please contact us as soon as you can. We will gladly adjust your tuition. If you are not going to take the whole semester, we will calculate adjustments before the semester starts.

 

Refund Rates:

At least one week prior to the first day of the semester: 100%

Within a week before the first day of the semester: 80%

Before the end of the third class meeting day of the semester: 50%

After the third class meeting day of the semester: None

Academic Calendar

 

2024 Spring Semester

There will be no Monday, Wednesday or Thursday Classes during MLK week.

There will be no Monday, Wednesday or Thursday Classes for Spring Break.

2024 Summer Session

Classes are casual conversations session, not structured classes so no books required.

No children classes during summer sessions.

2024 Fall Semester

There will be no Monday Class for Sept 2.

There will be no Wednesday or Thursday Classes for Thanksgiving

Classes end week of Nov 25.


The classes are delivered in both Japanese and English or Japanese only, depending on the level. Students are encouraged to speak Japanese as much as possible. Instructors are all native speakers.

Classes for all courses meet once per week. Students may repeat various courses until they are ready to progress to a higher level.

  • No. It is not required that you become a member of the FWJS in order to take language classes. One of the benefits for being a member is a discount on tuition.

  • Yes. If you signed up for a class and find it either too easy or too difficult, you may discuss with your teacher about which class might be more suitable for your current skill level. You may change classes, if available, within the first month of the semester.

  • Yes. We have early registration and take students up to the first two weeks of the semester, if the class is available. If you missed signing up during the registration period and would like to be notified for the following semester, you can sign up on our waiting list by clicking here.

  • Most of our materials can be found on Amazon, Ebay, and other books stores like Kinokuniya. Your teacher will contact you with a list of books and materials for your class after early registration ends.

  • We offer weekly classes for children 5 to 16 years of age on Thursdays at 6pm-6:45pm. Children will be grouped according to their age and skill level. We usually have 3 groups. The first two levels will be taught in English and the advanced level will be taught in Japanese. We do have a waiting room if the parents would prefer to stay while the children learn.

    During the first 10 minutes everyone will come together to learn a Japanese alphabet song, traditional fun exercises, and learn/practice Japanese greeting, before being sent off to their appropriate groups.

    In the Fall, students will be introduced to origami, Japanese crafts, Japanese learning games, introduction to Japanese language, reading and writing.

    In the Spring, students will be introduced to calligraphy, Japanese foods, crafts, games, and the Japanese language, reading and writing.

    If high school students 16 years of age would like to enroll in the adult classes, they may with parental written consent.
